Here for your pleasure is a Mountain Red with teeth-staining concentration, buckets of black & blue berry flavors, Southern French-like spice & herb pleasures and an army of tannins on a peacekeeping mission.
“Tip Top Vineyard,” perched atop a crest in the Vaca Mountain Range, is owned and farmed by Green & Red Winery. The tiny Petite Sirah grapes are carted half a mile down the mountain to the winery…an estate wine through and through. Green & Red’s been making wine like this since the 1970s.
This Green & Red Petite Sirah recently turned a corner, arriving at deliciousness. Earlier tastings of the wine for me were firm to say the least – expected of good, young Petite Sirah from a mountain vineyard. Today, the fruit flavors are midnight-dark and alive, peppery spices permeate and the tannins, strong as an ox, have subdued enough allowing the black and boysenberry flavors to emerge. While still quite the baby, it has reached a plateau for great drinking. I expect it will reach another plateau in five years.
And the price! $35 and discounts. If I’m shipping it, you’re looking at around $37/bottle delivered to your door! A dynamite Napa Valley “Big Mountain Red” for $35? What is this, 1989?

Shelf-talker notes: “From the highest point of Green & Red Estate, 2000 feet high in the Vaca Range in Chiles Valley. A bold, dark, spicy red wine with a rustic side (“Mountain” Petite Sirah = “Chewy”), let it breathe for an hour or two and then taste plum preserves, dried figs, cocoa powder, herbs de Provence, black olive and espresso. Drink this powerful Napa Valley red wine with hearty roasted or grilled red meats. A scant 110 cases made.”
