The Cattleya Pinot Noir Cuvee Number One, still a baby, is already very tasty. Loads of ripe wild red cherries, raspberry liqueur and some blackberries vault from glass to nose then caress the palate. 55% new French Oak aged gives a tasty essence. Pie Spice, rosewater and black tea: classic, high end Russian River Pinot.
This is Cattleya’s first (Number One) first appellation wine, begun with the 2014 vintage. Read the Cattleya Winery story and about owner/winemaker Bibiana Gonzalez Rave here.
From the Outer Space Wines Newsletter from January 10, 2023:
Cattleya not only make my California Top Ten Pinot Noir Producers list, it consistently makes my bigger/bolder Pinot Noir customers very happy. That’s the case with the Cattleya Pinot Noir “Cuvee Number One” Russian River Valley 2021 ($65/bottle). Get dark and ripe red cherries, slightly liqueur-ish, blackberries, cinnamon & nutmeg and red rose/dried orange zest/black tea aromas throughout. Over half new French oak aged is used because the fruit was so perfectly ripe, resulting in 14.3% alcohol. 475 cases made. I’ve turned a handful of customers onto this wine already. I have some for you
